Tanzania proudly holds the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Safe Travel Stamp, the world’s first-ever global safety and hygiene stamp, in recognition of our implementation of health and hygiene protocols designed to keep travelers and ourselves safe and healthy. We are among 80 global destinations certified and authorized to use the stamp.
We know you’re looking forward to your safari–we’re looking forward to hosting you! But naturally, you may have concerns about how to stay safe and healthy during your trip. We share that concern and have always considered guest safety and well-being our top priority.
Brenda Kimaro serves as our company’s COVID-19 Liason Officer. She stays in regular contact with designated government and health officials regarding best practices and government requirements for protecting guests and local staff from COVID-19 infection. If you have health-related questions prior to your arrival, you can reach Brenda at email@example.com or on Whatsapp at +255 689 470 449.
During your safari, please speak directly to your Tanzania Choice Safaris guide if you have any questions or concerns and he will assist you.
Tanzania requires visitors to present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 of arrival in Tanzania. Some airlines also require travelers to present a negative COVID-19 test before boarding their flights so please check your airline’s requirements and plan accordingly.
Travelers must also complete a Traveler’s Health Surveillance Form online within 24 hours of arrival: https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz/
For many travelers, this means you will need to submit your form en route during a layover. To make that easier, we recommend downloading the form (see download link above) and filling it out in advance so you have everything you need for completing the form online. (We are advocating with the Ministry of Health to extend the window for submitting the form so there is time to submit it before travel.)
Additional health screening procedures are in place at all Tanzania airports. Please expect some additional time at the airport when you arrive to complete the screenings.
All arriving travelers are required to take a rapid COVID test after disembarking their plane at a cost of $25 USD, payable in cash (please bring bills in good condition with no tears or marks dated at least 2009 or later).
From arrival until departure, you will remain with the same guide and vehicle to minimize your contact with other people. Our guides are friendly people accustomed to greeting visitors with warm handshakes and big hugs, but they will refrain from physical greetings and instead welcome you with a big smile.
Your vehicle will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized prior to your arrival, and your guide will sanitize high-touch areas in the car at least once a day. Hand sanitizer will be stocked in the vehicle for your use, but we also recommend you bring your own travel-size sanitizer to carry with you throughout your travels.
A separate set of binoculars and wildlife guidebooks will be available for your use so you do not need to pass them between you and your guide. We encourage you to also bring your own binoculars if you have them.
You and your guide can decide together about wearing masks when in the vehicle. It will be easier to hear and understand each other without masks, but we want everyone to feel comfortable with the decision.
Since your guide and vehicle will be for your exclusive, you will come into close contact with very few other people while on safari. At park entry gates and picnic sites, we encourage you to maintain a distance of at least one meter from other travelers, wear masks in enclosed areas such as public restrooms or visitor centers, and wash and/or sanitize your hands after touching door handles or other surfaces. Temperature screenings may be required at the park entry gates.
Our accommodation partners have all implemented safety protocols according to the layout and logistics of their particular property. These efforts may include:
- training staff on prevention of the spread of infectious diseases
- enhanced cleaning and sanitizing procedures for rooms and public areas
- temperature screenings of guests upon arrival
- hand sanitizing stations throughout the property
- physical distancing for dining, private dining areas or in-room dining
- pre-plated meals or family-style meals at tables rather than buffets
- health screenings of staff prior to reporting to work
- required mask-wearing by staff
- required mask-wearing by guests
We trust our accommodation partners to take great care in protecting your health and well-being during your stay with them. Many of them have outlined their protocol on their respective websites for your reference.
Many countries and airlines require travelers to present a negative COVID-19 test result prior to boarding flights home. PCR testing is available in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Serengeti National Park. We will design your safari itinerary to ensure you can take the test in time to get the result before departure, and we will assist you in navigating the testing process. Please let us know the specific regulations for your home country and/or airline as they do vary. The base cost for the test is $100 USD; other charges may apply depending on where you need to take your test.
Currently, KLM requires a rapid test taken just prior to boarding departure flights. The rapid test is available at the airport; travelers should plan on arriving 4 hours before departure to allow time for the test and flight check-in. The base cost for the test is $25 USD; other charges may apply.
In the unlikely case that your test comes back positive, you will not be allowed to board your flight and must self-quarantine in Tanzania at your own cost until you test negative. We have a contingency plan in place for that unlikely scenario and will assist you with those arrangements.
While Tanzania Choice Safaris and all of our tourism partners take your health and safety seriously and have implemented protocols to protect you and us, it is important to understand the contagious nature of COVID-19 and accept that we cannot guarantee that you will not become infected during your travels. Please carefully consider your comfort level with the risk associated with travel before booking your safari.
We also strongly encourage you to purchase cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance coverage to protect your investment in your safari.
